Tod Weidner - "Favorites"

Updated: Dec 21, 2023

My friend Tod Weidner has a tremendous new piece of work which came out recently.

Drumming on it (and on a lot of his recent west coast based work) is none other than the incomparable Steve Ferrone (drummer with Tom Petty for decades), which is so exciting on so many levels for Tod and all of us who love The Heartbreakers.

Tod’s personal reflections on this latest production…

“Favorites” holds a special place in my heart. It’s one of my…well…”favorites” of the crop of songs I’ve written since embarking on my solo project. It was the first song I wrote that really pushed me in a different direction. I’ve loved old Soul/R&B forever, but it always felt like I was wearing a costume when I tried to write something in that style. “Favorites” felt like me, filtered through the Soul/R&B lens; it unlocked a new door for me.

“That would be reason alone for me to be thrilled with it, but my talented producer buddy Nomad and my good friend, manager, executive producer, and general right-hand man Jack Piatt put their rolodexes to work and set gears in motion that resulted in a recording session featuring a real dream team of legendary musicians who took my song and elevated it beyond my wildest dreams. In addition to Nomad (who was Babyface’s music director for many years, as well as being a prolific soundtrack composer/musician and a friend to working musicians everywhere with his podcast, The Career Musician), “Favorites” features Erik-G Musik (a kick-ass musician and educator, and a very good dude) on keyboards, Tim Carmon on Hammond organ (he’s played with Eric Clapton, BB King, and Beyoncé, to name just a few), bass legend Alex Al (who was Michael Jackson’s longtime bassist of choice, along with stints with Stevie Wonder, Al Jarreau, the Arsenio Hall Show band etc., etc.), and Ashley Támar (who did extensive work with Prince) on some beautiful, soulful vocals. To be honest, Ashley’s performance was the main reason I ended up re-recording my vocal at home later. My wife, who is smarter than I ever hope to be, once said, “surround yourself with people better than you.”. Ashley raised the bar, for sure.”
