The documentary ‘Steal This Story, Please!’ by Tia Lessin and Carl Deal is some truly inspirational work. One that delves into the history of one of America’s greatest journalists, and the independent media juggernaut she was an instrumental force in helping to create.
It’s a history that I’ve had some loose connection to over the years, what with my own vocational history in working with, through and for indie media over the decades.
Seeing this film and revisiting some of that history through it, serves to make that listener comment about how “It’s All Happening is like as if ‘Democracy Now’ was a music show” feel even better.
In fact, one of the original inspirations for ‘It’s All Happening’ was my earlier program production work with “UnCommon Sense TV Media”, which was first created in 2003 and ran for a number of years, amidst the full on excesses of the Cheney/Bush regime years (more here at https://ustvmedia.org ).
A lot of that work in community media and media activism intersected with the work Goodman and DN were doing over the years, which included bringing Democracy Now! to the television cablewaves of the Greater Dayton area back in 2003 (we were around the 200+ station to add it at the time I believe? Now DN can be seen/heard over 1,500 stations), as well as producing a live event in Dayton with Goodman and legendary TV host and producer Phil Donahue (who got his start in Dayton).
It’s All Happening is just the latest production venture in a long history of using media to help shape and amplify the narrative for a better world.
Pass it on…
